Sir John Mandeville's world by QuantumBranching Sir John Mandeville's world by QuantumBranching
A world where Sir John Mandeville was a relatively reliable travel writer, a number of years after his demise.

A more detailed description you want? Some time in the future maybe.

Bruce

PS - the Terrestrial Paradise is a matter of debate, since the bloody mountain is 70,000 feet high and unclimable even not counting the mile-high sheer wall at the top and the perpetual wall of flame on top of that, and too high for even the most advanced flying magical horse technology this world can produce, so flying in is also out.

Really lovely. My complements. According to what I could sort out from Dante, the terrestrial Paradise is the antipodes of Jerusalem, which is either Tahiti or Fiji depending on your mood.

You, sir, are always making (or rather releasing) a lot of maps lately.

Releasing: this is older stuff I never got around to putting up here for one reason or another. CyberPhoenix001 actually tracked down all of the maps I put up on alternatehistory.com that I didn't put up here, and after they went through all that trouble, who am I to refuse to put them up?

I thought Prester John was supposed to be the Emperor of Ind[ia].

I read a bit of the Travels, and yes, Prester John is the Emperor of India:

"From [there] go men by many journeys through the land of Prester John, the great Emperor of Ind. And men clepe his realm the isle of Pentexoire."

Well, he certainly mentions a number of Indian states without any reference to them being ruled by PJ. Why don't you make your own map of Prester John's territories? With blackjack? And hookers? :D

I thought it was in Ethiopia. Wikipedia says we're both right.

At first, Prester John was imagined to reside in India; tales of the Nestorian Christians' evangelistic success there and of Thomas the Apostle's subcontinental travels as documented in works like the Acts of Thomas probably provided the first seeds of the legend. After the coming of the Mongols to the Western world, accounts placed the king in Central Asia, and eventually Portuguese explorers convinced themselves that they had found him in Ethiopia.

Nah. Unknown at the time of the narrative, right? Just lots of wacky island kingdoms, and it's not as far a trip west to get to Asia, since it extends further east than in reality.
